1.1 Functional tests

As a functional test, receiver temperatures were measured at room temperature. Except for the very first tests, receiver temperatures were measured in parallel for both receivers, so the test software framework appears to work as expected. An extensive log of all operations is saved to a postgresql database on the laptop in the clean room.

1.2 Load scan

The MPI flip mirror was driven in small steps across the loads in order to define their positions. Note, that there was hardly any temperature contrast between shroud and MPI hot load. The cold load is clearly seen, however, and has a cleaner profile compared to EM2 results. Note, that the vacuum chamber temperature was unstable during these measurements, leading to power offsets between successive scans.

Fitting the four observed passages of the cold load using a second order Gaussian profile yields the following result. The fitted curves are shown as solid lines, the fitted center positions of the power dip caused by the cold load are shown as dashed lines. The broader grey line represents the position of the cold load, which was used during RU-EM2 testing.

It turned out that a complete retuning at each setting including a reset of the FDM attenuator to 0 (maximum attenuation) followed by a ramp of of the FDM attenuator in five steps) took far too long time to be efficient. The algorithm was changed such that, when only the bias voltages of the 300 GHz doubler (both chains) and/or the 600 GHz doubler (1200 GHz chain) needed to be updated, the FDM attenuator setting was left untouched.

3.1 Notes

Unfortunately, the optimization routine was using the old positions of the MPI hot and cold load. Results will have to be recalculated once the MPI loads have been calibrated against the RU internal hot load.

We noticed, that the FDM at times has problems to lock, an observation shared by both Borys and Petro who worked with the FDM earlier. It appears that when setting the attenuator to 0 shortly after FDM switch on (the manual recommends to do this with 1 second of delay), it will typically be unable to lock. Removing this operation from the start-up procedure of the FDM proved much more reliable. This needs to be followed-up and understood.

11.2 Shadow bar measurement

A shadow bar measurment for checkeing beam alignment was performed at three frequencies in each band. Horizontal and vertical beam offsets were fitted to the observed power pattern. See the User Manual for Martin-Puplett Interferometer (JUI-IAP-SWI-MAN-002) for a description of the algorithm.

Finishing stability measurements. First set of spectra were taken during night between Nov 19 and 20, second set during night between Nov 22 and 23.

For both receivers, 5500 spectra were taken at each of eleven selected frequencies. Below, for each frequency we show plots with four panels:

  1. panel: mean spectrum in blue, surrounded by min and max in red.
  2. panel: drift of channels 256, 512 and 768 as functions of time. An offset was added to the blue and green curves to keep them apart from the red one.
  3. From each spectrum the average spectrum was subtracted and the array of 5500 spectra times 1024 channels is shown as an image. The range of resulting intensities was cut to -2, +2.
  4. Allan variance plots for both continuum (input values were the data from the blue curve of the 2nd panel) and spectroscopic stability (input values were the differences of the blue and red curve of the 2nd panel)

The new 1200 GHz receiver was tested at 6 selected frequencies above 25.0 GHz using a very restricted tuning range and at three different FDM power levels (18.0, 17.5 and 17.0 dBm). The table shows best achieved noise temperatures at each of these levels.

These are zip-files with ACS spectra stored in Json format, sorted by frequency.

Sideband gains were fitted following the procdure outlined in Renker et.al. Note, that many of the frequencies were scanned more than once, not necessarily at the same stepping resolution. The following two plots show fits at three different ACS channels for the case of LO = 537.705 GHz

  • 2501 steps of 0.01 mm from 102 mm down to 77 mm
  • 201 steps of 0.05 mm from 102 mm down to 92 mm

All derived gains from 620 scans in each of the 1024 ACS channels are available in this csv-file. The resulting spectra of LSB and USB gains are shown in this document. Note, that plots at a given LO frequency may be an overlay of several scans, i.e. all 620 scans result in a total of 396 plots.

We can focus on only a few ACS channels in order to see the overall trend across the full tuning ranges of the two receivers, otherwise such a plot gets far too crowded. Using channels 256, 512 and 768, we get figure 35.
